Is it profitable to buy equipment and clothing on foreign marketplaces?

Russians are increasingly ordering electronics from abroad. These goods occupy half of the market for all online purchases, Kommersant FM was told by the CDEK.Shopping service. Next come clothing, shoes and perfumes. And here customers more often buy sneakers from both outdated brands and limited collaborations. Services for purchasing goods not only deliver parcels, but also look for custom-made products, including collectibles. How much does shopping with intermediaries cost? And who bears warranty obligations to the client? Aelita Kurmukova found out.

The audience of foreign delivery services has grown by a third over the past year, according to BIG Data MTS analysts. Most often, customers place orders through CDEK. Shopping – the service occupies 66% of the cross-border online trading market. A little less than 30% for the service from Boxberry. Parallel imports, as it turns out, could not meet the needs of Russians: expensive, not everything is available.

Buyers returned to foreign marketplaces through intermediaries. The commission for their services, Kommersant FM’s interlocutors share, ranges from 10% to 30%, but some take 50%. However, it is still cheaper than what is already sold in Russia. They order everything from clothes to motorcycles. And if something is not in the catalogs, you can search individually, says CDEK.Shopping Marketing Director Dmitry Kolosov:

“All new products are presented on the site, but the purchase application allows you to buy used ones. They prefer to order from Ebay, from any other online stores that involve the sale of used items. Among the unusual orders: they brought a collectible guitar worth 1.5 million rubles. from the United Arab Emirates. These could be customized computers for 2 million rubles, purchased in the previous year, like canned food.”

Most often, customers buy electronics abroad. Apple products are at the top: iPhone 15 Pro 256 GB, for example, at retail in Moscow last week cost 145 thousand rubles. (this is taking into account the 18% discount), and services were offered for 35 thousand rubles. cheaper. True, the average delivery time is two to three weeks. Even if you wait a month, the savings are significant, but all warranty issues will have to be resolved directly with the seller. Services only buy and deliver goods. If something doesn’t suit you or you don’t like it, you have to accept it. Customers know about this, but take such a risk, says Mila Grosheva, marketing director of the BUYMI shopping service:

“There is a possibility of a return, but it is limited and only applies to defects if the product does not meet the quality. The spread across the sites is large. This includes Matches Fashion, for men – Mr Porter. The number of orders increased by approximately 40%.

The average bill remained approximately the same around €200-300, but due to the number of users we see an increase in sales volumes.”

Some are looking for luxury bags from the new collection and accessories, but most clients are chasing collaborations. Kanye West’s YZY Pods sneakers, which look more like socks, are currently on the waiting list. And in winter, Russians were looking for Moon Boots – moon-walking felt boots. Their services were delivered for 20 thousand rubles. – this is already with their commission, and at retail in Moscow they cost 60 thousand rubles. Those who are accustomed to foreign shopping come to such sites. And you shouldn’t expect a serious increase in traffic in the future, even if it turns out cheaper, notes Fedor Virin, partner at the analytical company Data Insight:

“You need to register, make a series of gestures, and then wait. Therefore, when online trading within a country is well developed, and in Russia it is at a very high level, users resort to this only in extreme cases. The likelihood that the duty-free threshold will return to $200 is slim.

But even if it is not extended, this will not become a brake on imports, because, firstly, it will still not compensate for the difference in price with parallel imports, much less the lack of goods.”

Buyers of foreign sites now pay tax only for goods over €1 thousand, this plus 15% on top. But the authorities have already made it clear that they will not maintain this level. The duty-free limit may be reduced to €200, as was already the case in 2020. True, now we are allegedly talking about collecting only 5%.
