Iraq intends to limit imports of petroleum products to a complete stop in 2024. This was stated by the representative of the Iraqi Ministry of Oil Asem Jihad in an interview with “RIA News”.
“In 2024, Iraq will rely more on local production, and once a number of refineries start production, there will be a reduction in the level of imports of petroleum products to a complete stop,” Mr. Jihad said.
Iraq is purchasing some types of petroleum products, including improved gasoline, to close the gap in the domestic market. On April 1, 2023, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said that the Iraqi government is working to improve the productivity of the country’s oil refineries with the goal of completely eliminating the import of petroleum products.
