Director James Cameron has been accused of appropriating different cultures because of Avatar: The Way of the Water. Native American activists called the film racist.
Navajo artist and Indigenous Pride Los Angeles co-chair Yue Begai took to social media to denounce the film and urge potential viewers not to go to theaters.
“Join the natives and other indigenous groups around the world who are boycotting this horrible and racist film,” the activist wrote. Her post has received over 46,000 likes.
The artist emphasized that the director “appropriated” the culture of the Indians in order to satisfy the white man’s savior complex. In her opinion, the blue faces of the main characters are a racist caricature of the skin color of indigenous peoples. In addition, not a single Indian played in this film.
Begay also approached Cameron personally. She encouraged him to stop positioning himself as an advocate for indigenous peoples and instead hire them for his projects.
