Indiana authorities accuse TikTok of cheating users

Wednesday, December 7, Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita filed two lawsuits against short video service TikTok. The first lawsuit relates to the fact that, according to the prosecutor, TikTok advertises itself as a safe application suitable for teenagers from 12 years old, despite the fact that the service has a lot of content of a sexual nature, mentioning drugs, obscene language, etc.
The second lawsuit accuses TikTok of violating consumer protection laws by misleading users about the safety of their data and content. According to the Indiana authorities, the service’s claims that the Chinese authorities – TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance – cannot access this data, misled users.
“The TikTok app is a malicious and dangerous threat, distributed freely to unsuspecting consumers in Indiana by a Chinese company that is well aware of the harm it causes to users,” Mr. Rokita said. In the lawsuits, he demands to fine the service, as well as to force them to change the relevant norms and practices of its work. TikTok declined to comment on the claims, saying only that security, privacy, and protecting its community are top priorities for the service.
Indiana became the first US state to sue TikTok. In general, the American authorities pay quite a lot of attention to the activities of the service. Thus, the prosecutor’s offices of several states in March started an investigation into the impact of TikTok on minors. Also reportedthat the US Department of Homeland Security is investigating how TikTok is cracking down on child pornography.
