India introduces mandatory testing of cough syrups for export
[ad_1]
The Indian authorities have made mandatory safety testing of all cough syrups that local companies export to other countries of the world. This happened after similar drugs were linked to a series of deaths in countries around the world from the Gambia to Uzbekistan. The new rule is stated in the order (.pdf) General Directorate of Foreign Trade of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of India. From June 1, all syrups intended for export must have a safety certificate issued by a state laboratory.
Last year, at least 89 children died outside the country. Then the World Health Organization reported that the cough syrups of the two companies Maiden Pharmaceuticals Ltd and Marion Biotech contained deadly toxins. Both companies denied the allegations at the time. The manufacturers are currently under investigation.
In April of this year, the World Health Organization issued a warning about another cough syrup produced by QP Pharmachem Ltd. Complaints against him came from Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.
The accusations were a heavy blow to the Indian pharmaceutical industry, considered one of the largest in the world.
