At the end of eight months of 2023, India and China topped the list of countries in terms of the number of registered projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. These states account for 29 and 24% of the total number of carbon projects, which in general has already exceeded 2000. This is reported in a review by the Analytical Center (AC) of the Fuel and Energy Complex with reference to data from the international certification system Verra. Vedomosti reviewed the presentation.
China and India also lead in terms of the level of estimated (planned) annual reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Of approximately 2 billion tons of CO2 equivalent per year, they account for 22 and 20%, respectively. Türkiye is in 3rd place, far behind the leaders. It accounts for about 7% of all climate projects in the Verra database and 3% of the total annual estimated emissions reductions. The United States accounts for only 4.6% of the total number of projects in the Verra database, and European countries account for less than 1%. Data on the planned reduction in these regions are not provided in the review.
