The Ukrainian government may disband at least five of 19 ministries amid cuts in government spending, Novoye Vremya reported, citing sources in the office of the Ukrainian president and the Servant of the People party. According to them, changes may be introduced in the coming months.

As Novoye Vremya writes, some of the functions of the abolished departments will be transferred to the Center of Government – the department of the Prime Minister’s office. At the same time, there are no plans to dismiss Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal, according to sources, since “he suits everyone.” As of today, there is no working group to disband ministries, notes Novoye Vremya.

On March 4, Denis Shmyhal told reporters that the authorities plan to reduce the number of ministries by a third, as well as reduce the number of civil servants. He also spoke about the work on the formation of the Government Center, in which all support administrative functions will be concentrated.

On February 25, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky said that he was discussing with the prime minister the abolition of some ministries amid the budget deficit. According to him, the final decision could be made in the spring. The Ukrainian budget deficit for 2023 amounted to $54.75 billion. For 2024, the Ukrainian budget includes a deficit of $41 billion.
