In January-March 2023, cyber fraudsters managed to carry out 252,000 operations without the consent of clients, totaling RUB 4.5 billion, informs Central Bank in the “Review of reporting on information security incidents in the transfer of funds”. In almost every second case, social engineering methods were used. The cybercriminals stole most of the money through transfers using online banking. At the same time, Russian banks were able to repel 2.7 million cyber fraud attacks on their clients’ accounts, preventing the theft of 712 billion rubles. For the first time, the regulator discloses information about repelled attacks.
In the first quarter, the Central Bank initiated the blocking of 96.9 thousand phone numbers from which scammers called citizens, and 8.3 thousand phishing sites disguised as the official websites of financial organizations.
