In a letter from the head of the Federal Air Transport Agency, Alexander Neradko, it is said that the number of collisions that did not lead to damage to the sides increased to 244 cases (an increase of 7%). In addition, there has been an increase in cases of collisions with other animals – according to Neradko, in 12 out of 21 cases, aircraft had to go around.
Last autumn, the Federal Air Transport Agency was also marked frequency of bird strikes. In the first nine months of 2022, 918 cases were recorded (an increase of 12%). Most of the cases occurred in mid-summer, with 204 collisions as of July.
A famous case of a plane crash due to birds getting into the aircraft mechanism occurred on August 15, 2019. Then the Ural Airlines Airbus 321 collided with a flock of seagulls during takeoff, as a result of which both engines failed. The ship made an emergency landing, the ship’s commander Damir Yusupov and co-pilot Georgy Murzin landed the liner with retracted landing gear in a cornfield 1 km from the airport. None of the 226 passengers and seven crew members died.
Back in 2018, in a letter to his regional subordinates, Neradko named the airports where bird strikes most often occur per 100,000 takeoffs/landings. The worst in 2017 was the statistics of the Abakan airport, in the top ten there are also six southern harbors, Sheremetyevo closed the top ten, Domodedovo and Vnukovo were in 15th and 16th places.
