In Russia, sales of alcohol and tobacco using biometrics may be launched by 2024

The mass launch of services that allow you to confirm age when purchasing alcohol and tobacco using biometrics is planned for 2024. About it "Izvestia" said the General Director of the Center for Biometric Technologies (CBT - a joint venture of Rostelecom, the Central Bank and the Federal Property Management Agency) Vladislav Povolotsky.

As Mr. Povolotsky clarified, the service will be available to those who have submitted data to the Unified Biometric System (UBS) or received simplified biometrics, and also confirmed the “Digital Profile”. The press service of the Central Bank noted that the mass introduction of the service will take time, but most stores are already equipped with devices that allow payments and age verification using facial recognition.

Vice President of X5 Group Stanislav Bogdanov (the parent company of the Pyaterochka, Perekrestok and Chizhik chains) told Izvestia that the company plans to launch services to confirm age using biometrics at self-service checkouts. However, he emphasized that the final decision depends on the cost of the experiment, as well as the format of interaction with consents to the processing of personal data.

The State Duma adopted a law on identification using biometrics at the end of 2022. Now all companies “owning systems that provide biometric-based authentication” must transfer data to the EBS. The law excludes investigative activities, ensuring state security, sanitary and epidemiological well-being, etc.
