In Russia, specific VPN services that pose a threat to the security of the Internet will be blocked. The corresponding explanations were prepared by the Ministry of Digital Development, RIA Novosti reports.

“Based on the decision of the expert commission, specific VPN services and VPN protocols on the mobile communication network for foreign traffic that are identified as a threat can be filtered,” the Ministry of Digital Development reports in a document.

The agency also clarifies that bypassing restrictions on information to which access has been limited by law poses a threat to the security of the Internet.

Earlier, the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Anton Tkachev, sent an appeal to the government, in which he pointed out the position “in which we identify VPN services that do not comply with Russian legislation, and then, in fact, block everything.”

Mr. Tkachev noted that blocking VPN services maintains sanctions pressure on Russians, since VPNs may be required for the correct operation of household appliances, including those made in China. The creation of domestic services, according to the author of the appeal, will not solve the problem, because resource owners will “close them from providers.”

Earlier, Roskomnadzor (RKN) announced plans to independently block sites containing information about methods of bypassing blocking in Russia. To the Ministry of Digital Development reported that companies that work with VPNs and encounter failures in the operation of such services should contact the RKN to remove the blocking.
