The memorable date will be dedicated to exhibitions around the world

April 8, 2023 marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso. For the anniversary, many museums around the world arrange grandiose exhibitions. About fifty projects are planned at the largest art venues in different countries. In Russia, however, nothing is being prepared for this date. At least not a single Russian museum has yet announced projects related to the name of Pablo Picasso, who not only visited Russia and participated in Diaghilev’s Russian Seasons, but was also married to the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova.

The Year of Picasso project is overseen by a commission organized by the governments of France and Spain. Recall that the artist was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain, and died in 1973 in Mougins, in southeastern France. The commission coordinates 42 planned exhibitions in leading European and American museums. Events dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the death of the great artist will begin at the end of October 2022 – with an exhibition at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.

A large project is also being prepared by the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. A total of 12 exhibitions dedicated to the memory of Pablo Picasso will be held in France. Spain is planning 16 exhibitions, the USA – 7, the same number – Germany. Museum projects are also being prepared for the date in Switzerland, Monaco, Romania and Belgium.

In addition, next year, the Picasso Research Center will open in Paris, a space in the National Picasso Museum equipped with modern digital technologies and should become a place “for scientific exchange and the work of art historians from all over the world.”

So far, not a single museum in Russia has announced that it will prepare some exhibitions dedicated to the memory of Pablo Picasso.
