The man had his habits. Every two days at the same times and according to a route never changed, he ran near the village of Venzolasca (Haute-Corse) where he lived. On Wednesday August 10, around 9 p.m., François-Xavier Poli, 38, earthmoving contractor, father of two girls aged 12 and 9, was no exception to this habit. It took him badly. He was killed by several bullets fired from two separate long guns on the track he took while jogging. Headphones on, he probably didn’t hear his killers approaching.
He was discovered around 9:30 p.m. The mayor of the village, Balthazar Federici, had gone looking for him after being alerted by the victim’s companion. “She phoned this elected official because she was worried about not seeing her companion return”, indicated the public prosecutor of Bastia, Arnaud Viornery, joined by The world. According to the latter and the gendarmes in charge of the investigation, François-Xavier Poli was unknown to the police and gendarmerie services.
In the hour following the discovery of the body, a burnt vehicle was found in the town of Canale-di-Verde (Haute-Corse), located about forty kilometers from Venzolasca. According to investigators, there is a probability that it is the one on board which the perpetrators of this assassination circulated.
Venzolasca, stronghold of a feared clan
Venzolasca is no ordinary Casinca village. This micro-region, located above the eastern plain, is the stronghold of one of the most feared mafia clans on the island, the so-called “shepherds of Venzolasca”, over which the Federici family imposes its domination. Three brothers from this family have been registered for many years in the organized crime file. Ange-Toussaintconsidered by investigators to be the chief of the clan, and Jean-Francois are serving long prison sentences for murder. A third, Frédéric, has been convicted several times for criminal association.
Finally, the fourth of the siblings, Balthazar, mayor of the town, is a former territorial councilor of Corsica, elected on the lists of the ex-president of the island executive Paul Giacobbi, who was a radical leftist deputy. Balthazar’s first deputy mayor of Venzolasca is Antoine Poli, alias Tony. According to the first elements of the investigation, it would be a distant cousin of the victim. Their respective fathers were first cousins.
A little over a month ago, another entrepreneur was the victim of an assassination in Corsica. On Friday, June 24, Jean-Christophe Mocchi, a business leader from Propriano (Corse-du-Sud), judge at the commercial court of Ajaccio, fell under the bullets of a killer, while he was dining in a restaurant in the seaside town of Valinco.
