Uncertainty, security concerns and budget revisions are driving businesses to cut back on wellness programs and activities, resort managers say. A sharp decline in the number of corporate bookings can cost objects up to 40% of the load, but so far the decline has been observed mainly in the south of the country. At the same time, there is a decrease in the depth of sales across the entire market, which has led to a decrease in the number of bookings for the New Year holidays.

In autumn, sanatoriums faced a decrease in the volume of corporate bookings, Mikhail Danilov, medical director of the Association for Health Tourism and Corporate Health (AOT), told Kommersant. According to him, we are talking about health improvement programs and MICE events.

Among the reasons, Mr. Danilov names the general uncertainty, security considerations and the revision of budgets. He added that the decrease in demand of corporate clients is still non-massive.

Bella Gevorgyan, general manager of the Yalta Mriya Resort & Spa, speaks of a reduction in corporate demand due to closed flights and lower business costs. The average facility occupancy in September-October 2022 decreased to 75% against 82% a year earlier. The occupancy rate of “Buzuluksky Bor” in the Orenburg region has decreased from more than 80% to 75%. Sanatorium director Vadim Greshnov points out that companies have reduced travel and treatment costs for employees. More Spa Resort in Alushta has lost 25-35% of its guests. “There are appeals from the corporate market, but less than last year,” says marketing director of the health resort Maria Zablotskaya. The managing shareholder of Lago-Naki in Adygea, Tatyana Mamontova, adds that since mid-September, the business has frozen all issues of cooperation. The founder of Green Flow, Alexander Tertychny, noticed a two-three-fold decrease in corporate sales, but noted that the total load of the facility exceeded last year.

Irina Zabolotnaya, deputy director of the social policy department at Norilsk Nickel, told Kommersant that the company does not intend to abandon the spa treatment of employees and maintains a pool of facilities. “Next year, the recovery period will be reduced from 21 to 18 days, which makes it possible to maintain the program,” she says. JSC RZD “Kommersant” reported that they did not review the approach to sending employees to rest in a sanatorium.

The decline in the volume of corporate orders can be a serious blow to health resorts. According to AOT estimates, such bookings form up to 40% of the facility load.

And this factor is not the only problem of business. Vadim Greshnov points out that partial mobilization contributed to the overall decline in demand and cancellations of bookings. According to Tatyana Mamontova, plans to restore the loading of Lago-Naki this year collapsed in February, September and October. She calls the restriction of flights to Krasnodar airport the main negative factor.

Mikhail Danilov says that the decline is observed mainly in regions with reduced transport accessibility and enhanced security measures, and recreation in the regions of residence has become a frequent occurrence. General Director of the Moscow center “Peredelkino” Maxim Suchkov confirms the growth in demand for spa treatment in the fall by 30%. They also talk about a good load in the Malye Soli health resort in the Yaroslavl region and the Stanko sanatorium in Ivanovskaya. Marina Perova, head of the latter’s marketing department, expects occupancy to rise by 20% yoy in November, noting a decrease in the number of guests with preferential packages.

All resorts have also experienced a sharp decline in the depth of bookings due to uncertainty. In spring, accommodation was planned one or two weeks before arrival, and in autumn – two or three days before, says Mikhail Danilov. Igor Shershnev, Operations Director of the Valuevo sanatorium, notes that guests who previously planned their vacation for a month or more now do it 7–14 days in advance, which has led to a decrease in bookings for the New Year holidays.
