In 2022, about 22% of the generated electricity in the EU came from solar and wind energy, which was the highest figure in the history of the EU. At the same time, energy generation through gas combustion accounted for 20%, 1 p.p. less than in 2021. The German media citing a study by the Ember think tank.
According to Ember, EU countries generated 203 terawatt-hours (TWh) of solar energy in 2022, up 24% from 2021. Analysts note that thanks to this, Europe was able to save €10 billion on gas purchases. Wind power also generated 420 TWh of energy, 33 TWh more than in 2021.
Germany has the largest share in renewable energy generation. During the year, the country received 126 TWh from wind generation and 59 TWh from solar energy. At the same time, green energy accounts for only 10% of all electricity generation in Germany, notes Ember.
The transition to green energy was accelerated against the backdrop of a reduction in gas supplies from Russia. In 2022, Gazprom significantly reduced the volume of gas pumped to the EU. Also, due to explosions, gas supplies through the Nord Stream gas pipeline were completely stopped for an indefinite period.
