The Central Bank reported that the new hundred-ruble banknote, which appeared in circulation in 2023, will not add images of the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions, as well as the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), annexed to Russia in 2022.
Edition “Info24” drew attention to the fact that in the upper right corner of the new banknote there is a map of Russia without the outlines of the DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
As representatives of the Bank of Russia told Info24, “at present there is no talk of further modernization of 100 rubles,” and images of new regions will not be added to the banknote for now. They emphasized that the absence of new subjects on the banknote is due to the fact that the design of the banknote was developed in 2021, even before the territorial changes.
The new hundred-ruble bill was introduced into circulation from June 30, 2022. The banknote is made in a design code similar to the 200 and 2000 ruble banknotes introduced into circulation in 2017. The banknote is dedicated to Moscow and the Central Federal District of Russia. On its front side is the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin, on the back – the Rzhev Memorial to the Soviet Soldier. The bill is made in olive-orange tones.
The DPR, LPR, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions became part of Russia on September 30, 2022, following the results of referendums held in these regions. The West and Ukraine did not recognize the territorial changes and condemned them, calling them annexation; the new regions of the Russian Federation themselves are considered “occupied territories” by Kyiv and Western states.
