Ice cream production in Russia grew by 27% in the second quarter

In Russia, in the second quarter, ice cream production increased by 27% compared to the same period in 2022. Izvestia writes with reference to analysts from the Chestny Znak system.

In the second quarter, production amounted to 188 million kg, while last year the figure was at the level of 148 million kg. In addition, there is an increase in production from quarter to quarter – in the first three months of 2023, 99.53 million kg of products were produced in Russia.

In the second quarter of 2023, the average price for 1 kg of ice cream was 635 rubles, the article says.

Revaz Yusupov, deputy general director of the labeling system operator of the Center for the Development of Advanced Technologies, attributed the increase in production to weather conditions, since the summer of 2023, according to him, is much warmer than the atypically cold summer of 2022. “Another factor was the stabilization of prices for packaging and its supply routes. In addition, prices for raw milk have decreased this year, which led to the desire of producers to make stocks of products with a high shelf life,” the expert specified.

At the same time, analysts note that since the beginning of 2023, the share of ice cream in a waffle cup has increased, but in Q2, compared to last year, the share of this type of product decreased from 43 to 40%. A similar trend was demonstrated by the production of popsicles – from 27 to 25% in the total volume. The share of other types of ice cream, on the contrary, increased from 18 to 22%, the share of cones increased from 12 to 13%.

In June, Vedomosti wrotethat analysts from the Center for Industry Expertise of the Russian Agricultural Bank predicted an increase in ice cream production by 1.9% to 477,000 tons by the end of 2023. The main reasons for the projected growth in demand were the expansion of flavor diversity, the development of fast delivery services, as well as the emergence of a fitness product category with a low calories. According to experts, ice cream consumption in Russia in 2023 will increase from 3.1 to 3.3 kg per person, and then continue to grow and reach 4.4 kg by the end of 2030.
