IBM demanded the return of remote managers – Kommersant

IBM has required executives and managers to report to the office for work at least three days a week or be asked to look for another job. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to an internal order of IBM, the contents of which the agency was able to familiarize itself with. The order notes that management will “assess individual presence” based on badge markings at the entrance to company buildings.

To make it convenient for managers to get to their offices, they are recommended to find housing within 80 km from their place of work. Moreover, the order states that they must do this no later than August of this year. Those who cannot, do not succeed in, or do not apply for remote work positions will be required to leave IBM. The company itself confirmed to Bloomberg the contents of the internal order, noting that the company “intends to create a working atmosphere that maintains a balance of remote work and direct communication.”

In May 2023, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna said that the company would not force employees to return to the office. However, at the same time he noted that those who do not show up in the office will lose out in terms of career advancement. “Moving from one position to another is likely less likely because no one sees them as anything other than where they are,” he said at the time.
