Hungary extends agreement with Russia on additional gas supplies

Hungary agreed with Russia to extend the agreement on additional gas supplies. This was announced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Hungary, Peter Szijjarto, during his visit to Moscow, transmits “RIA News”.

It is also noted that the agreement with Gazprom remains in force, according to which, in the event of a sharp increase in fuel prices, Budapest will be able to receive a deferral of payments.

Earlier today Szijjarto arrived to Moscow for energy talks. The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry plans to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Director General of Rosatom Alexei Likhachev. The minister stressed that “the security of Hungary’s energy supply requires uninterrupted transportation of gas, oil and nuclear fuel.”

At the end of March, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak and Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto had a telephone conversation, during which the Russian side confirmedwhich continues to fulfill all contractual obligations with Hungary for the supply of gas, including the supply of additional volumes of energy.

At the end of August 2022 Hungary signed a contract with Gazprom, according to which, from September 1, the country receives 5.8 million cubic meters. m of gas per day. Prior to this, deliveries to the country were at the level of 2.6 million cubic meters. m of gas per day. Additional volumes of gas are supplied to Hungary via Turkish Stream and Serbia.

After the start of Russia’s special operation in Ukraine, Western countries imposed large-scale sanctions against the Russian Federation. At the same time, Budapest has repeatedly criticized the restrictions and raised the issue of their easing. According to Nowak, Hungary remains “the only EU country that firmly defends its national interests.”
