The termination of the transit of Russian gas through Ukrainian territory will put Ukraine in a difficult position, said the head of the Office of the Prime Minister of Hungary, Gergely Guiyash. The five-year contract between Russia and Ukraine runs until the end of 2024.
Mr Gouyash was asked if Hungary could act as an intermediary to help the two countries keep the current contract. He replied that so far this issue had not been raised, but suggested that “a solution will be found.” “Otherwise, the situation for Ukraine will be very difficult,” a representative of the Hungarian government is sure (quoted by TASS).
At the end of 2019, Ukraine and Gazprom signed an agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe, which is valid until December 31, 2024. The Washington Post wrotethat the Ukrainian authorities are lobbying for the preservation of the transit of gas and oil from the Russian Federation for fear of losing profits. Minister of Energy of Ukraine German Galushchenko considers it unlikelythat the parties will be able to agree on an extension of the contract. According to Forbes.ua, Ukrainian authorities want make the country an “energy hub of Europe” by 2050.
