Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó told reporters that he had discussed with Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak the possibility of amending long-term Hungarian-Russian contracts for the purchase of gas.
“Yesterday I consulted by phone with the Russian Deputy Prime Minister in charge of energy, Alexander Novak. He expressed his openness to the fact that if there is a need to change long-term Hungarian-Russian contracts for the purchase of gas due to the gas price ceiling, then this will be possible,” leads his words to RIA Novosti.
Earlier today, Szijjártó said that EU energy ministers did not agree about the price of gas. As previously reported, a group of 12 member states of the bloc, including Belgium, Greece, Italy and Poland, on the eve of an emergency meeting of EU energy ministers, called for lowering the price ceiling for gas from the Russian Federation.
Initially, the European Commission proposed launching a mechanism to limit gas prices subject to two conditions. First, the price of gas exceeds 275 euros per MWh for two weeks. Second, the price of TTF is 58 euros higher than the base price of LNG for 10 trading days.
On December 3, the EU countries agreed on a price ceiling for Russian oil in the amount of $60 per barrel, the restriction came into force on December 5. In addition to the EU countries, the G7 countries, Norway and Australia also joined the price ceiling.
Russian authorities have repeatedly said that Moscow will not supply fuel to countries that set a price cap or join the cap. The Kremlin said that they do not accept the introduction of restrictions. As Vedomosti wrote earlier, the authorities have formulated a response to the price ceiling for Russian oil.
