Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Hungary Péter Szijjártó met with Gazprom’s management as part of the Russian Energy Week. Mr. Szijjártó said that Hungary would sign amendments to the contract with Gazprom. According to the minister, from a financial point of view, the terms of the contract will become “even more favorable” for Hungary.
“The contract on behalf of Gazprom will be signed today. I think it would be unfair to interfere in discussions. But I must say that these are very favorable amendments to the agreement for us, because from a financial point of view, the terms of the contract become even more favorable for us,” said Peter Szijjarto, answering a question about the deferment of payment for gas (quoted from “RIA News”).
The day before, on October 12, Mr. Szijjarto met with the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, and agreed on deferred payments for Russian gas. According to the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, gas supplies from Russia will be redirected from the Nord Stream to the Turkish Stream. Earlier in the day, Peter Szijjártó declaredthat Hungary “will in no way support” the EU’s introduction of a ceiling on prices for Russian gas.
On August 31, Hungary and Gazprom signed an agreement on the supply of additional volumes of gas. Under the agreement, Hungary should receive 5.8 million cubic meters. m of gas per day from September 1. Peter Szijjártó said that Hungary imports more than 80% of its gas from Russia.
