Hungarian PM compares European Commission to a bar visitor over gas cap idea

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has criticized the plans of the European Commission (EC) to introduce a gas price ceiling. According to him, this is similar to a situation where a bar visitor wants to set the price of beer himself.
“The EC proposal for a gas price ceiling is like walking into a bar and telling the bartender you want to pay half the price of your beer. This doesn’t happen. Consumers cannot lower energy prices. Only diversification and competition can do it,” Orban tweeted.
The day before, he also said that the plan to limit gas prices in the European Union (EU) “is tantamount to a complete gas embargo for Hungary.” According to the Hungarian prime minister, “economic suicide will not help Ukraine.” He expects “heavy debate” over the idea of a price cap.
October 18 EC suggested a series of measures to curb gas prices in Europe. Among the proposals is to introduce dynamic pricing for gas and oblige countries to share it. It is also proposed to oblige EU countries to share gas with each other in case of emergency. EC President Ursula von der Leyen urged EU countries to joint purchases of gas.
