The Netherlands has returned the export license to South Stream Transport BV, operator of the Turkish Stream gas pipeline, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said. At the end of September South Stream Transport B.V. reportedthat her export license was revoked early due to European Union (EU) sanctions.
According to Mr. Szijjártó, the withdrawal of the license did not pose an immediate threat to supplies, “but in the long term the situation would not be encouraging.” He said that he had several times consulted with the Minister of Energy of the Netherlands Rob Jetten. “Yesterday, the Dutch authorities returned the export license to the company. This was also confirmed by Gazprom,” the Hungarian Foreign Minister said (quote from RIA Novosti).
Turkish Stream was launched in January 2020. It supplies gas from Russia to Turkey and the countries of Southern and South-Eastern Europe – Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The design capacity is estimated at 31.5 billion cubic meters. m of gas per year.
In the license revocation notice, the Dutch authorities referred to the EU regulation, according to which the supply of goods and services in Russia, “including its exclusive economic zone and the continental shelf,” is prohibited. South Stream Transport BV said that supplies via the Turkish Stream are important for Europe’s energy security.
