The proposed EU cap on Russian gas prices is contrary to the interests of Europe and Hungary, said Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjarto. According to him, the price ceiling will cause the immediate cessation of Russian gas supplies to Europe. Mr. Szijjártó made such a statement before an extraordinary meeting of EU energy ministers in Prague.
“The plan to limit prices exclusively for Russian gas coming through pipelines is completely contrary to the interests of Europe and Hungary. If price restrictions are imposed exclusively on Russian gas, this will obviously lead to an immediate cessation of Russian gas supplies to the EU. A day earlier it became known that the Czech Republic wants to exclude limiting the price of Russian gas from the agenda of the meeting of EU energy ministers on Friday. He called the introduction of a ceiling on the price of gas from Russia a political tool, not a solution to the problem.
Peter Szijjarto met with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow in July, aiming to get 700 million cubic meters. m of gas in addition to the existing long-term supply agreement. Last month, Gazprom began to increase supplies to Hungary via the Turkish Stream pipeline. Russia supplies most of Hungary’s oil and gas needs. Earlier, Budapest had sharply criticized EU sanctions on Russia, saying the moves had failed to significantly weaken Moscow and risked devastating the European economy.
