According to Japanese agency Nikkei, citing two unnamed senior managers, the Chinese company Huawei plans to double global shipments of its smartphones next year, bringing them to 60-70 million units. To this end, the company, which was sanctioned in 2019 by then-US President Donald Trump, has been increasing its reserves of components for several months – microboards, photo matrices, lenses, etc.
Huawei is actively collaborating with Chinese chip manufacturer Semiconductor Manufacturing International Co. (SMIC), which supplies 14nm and China’s most advanced 7nm chips for Huawei smartphones. The Nikkei source notes that SMIC may well increase the production of 7nm chips to 36 million units per year while simultaneously improving the quality of their work. However, sources note that Huawei’s plans may be disrupted if the United States decides to tighten its sanctions, which have already seriously hit the Chinese company. If at the end of 2019 global shipments of Huawei amounted to 240 million units, then last year, according to the research company IDC, they dropped to 30 million.
