Today, September 13, the Chinese technology corporation Huawei reported that it has entered into an agreement with its competitor Xiaomi on the mutual use of patents. The agreement provides for the companies to use each other’s communication technologies, including 5G technologies. Financial terms of the deal and specific details of which patents it covers were not disclosed.
In March, Chinese media reported that Huawei was suing Xiaomi, accusing the company of violating four of its patents, including those related to wireless communications, as well as screen locking and photography technologies in smartphones. It was previously reported that Huawei had entered into patent agreements with several other technology companies, including China’s Oppo and South Korea’s Samsung. Huawei also reported that it earned $560 million in patent royalties last year, and that the amount it earns from patent royalties has in recent years exceeded its own similar payments.
