How the number of counterfeit spare parts on the market is growing

More drivers have become wary of counterfeit parts. As follows from a survey by Fit Service and the Gruzdev-Analyze agency, three-quarters of motorists are worried that counterfeit or used components will be used during repairs. For comparison, a year earlier only half of respondents spoke about such a risk. At the same time, almost a quarter of car services encountered counterfeit parts and oils. The topic will be continued by Alexander Mezentsev.

Fake spare parts flooded the market after foreign brands left Russia. If previously foreign companies, together with law enforcement officers, monitored counterfeit goods, now this inspection system does not work.

“Components are imported through parallel import, which means that the chances of identifying low-quality products are close to zero,” notes Anton Shaparin, vice-president of the National Automobile Union:

In theory, the police should fight this, but the Ministry of Internal Affairs often cannot identify all counterfeits – this is the first thing. Secondly, a statement from the copyright holder is needed, but many brands have left the Russian market. Next, it is necessary that the volume of seized products be sufficient for the investigator – more than 150 thousand rubles. to initiate a criminal case. Then complex examinations are required.

And the “cherry on the cake”: you need to catch, in fact, a legal entity or a performer, and most often these are shell companies.”

It is impossible to accurately determine the volume of counterfeits in the auto parts market; according to the latest data, they account for up to half of the supply. As car service centers told Kommersant FM, they order components only from large distributors. And they, in turn, work directly with official suppliers. In this way, workshops reduce the risk of counterfeiting. But by the end of 2023, a quarter of services were still faced with counterfeit goods, according to survey data from Fit Service and Gruzdev-Analyze. Most often, spark plugs, filters, suspension and steering parts are counterfeited. Problems also arise with low-quality oils and technical fluids, says Ilya Plisov, board member of the Union of Automotive Services of Russia:

“Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs still go to the markets, checking something. But they can make claims regarding spare parts for GAZ and VAZ, but not for foreign brands. If these are some kind of levers, shock absorbers, this is often visible, it is not so easy to fake them. But it’s not so easy to notice that car oil is of poor quality. To do this, you must submit the product to a certified laboratory. The cost of assessment is from 3-5 thousand rubles. “This is comparable to the cost of a can of oil.”

According to auto business experts, there are about 60 Chinese brands represented in Russia (both official and illegal sales). In 2023, the import of cars from this country increased sevenfold – to $11.5 billion. In the current conditions, repairing Chinese foreign cars is problematic, says Nikita Rodionov, technical director of the international network of car service centers Fit Service: “The main problem of Chinese cars is the very difficult selection of spare parts.

They do not contain technical documentation, the so-called manufacturer’s manuals, and this greatly complicates the correct selection. Many Chinese manufacturers do not have strict standardization in terms of spare parts suppliers or any kind of unification. And especially with body repairs, this is probably the hardest thing.”

Three quarters of workshops in 2023 increased the price tag for services to 20%, calculated the Union of Automotive Services of Russia. They do not rule out that the figure will increase by an average of 10% in 2024.
