How expensive tutoring services have become

Spending on tutors for schoolchildren has risen at record levels. Now every second parent spends about 5 thousand rubles on additional classes for high school students. per week, according to a survey by the Superjob portal. At the same time, two years ago this amount was 1.5 thousand rubles. less. Graduates most often prepare in this way for the compulsory subjects of the Unified State Exam: Russian language and mathematics. In addition, quite high demand remains for teachers in English, physics and chemistry, the study says.

Tutoring services have also become more expensive for students in grades seven to nine. Now their parents spend 3.5 thousand rubles a week. Over two years, the figure increased by 500 rubles. School exam preparation teacher Anastasia Parnas notes that it is becoming increasingly difficult for graduates to enter universities on a budget, and this affects tutors’ fees: “I prepare for English, Russian and literature, mainly for exams, for admission to lyceums or schools. As a rule, I work with seventh to ninth grade students. The cost of one lesson, one hour, is up to 1 thousand rubles.

Compared to other years, prices have begun to rise, since supply is now more relevant. Exams are becoming more difficult, and more and more graduates are focusing on the budget.

It has now become more difficult for them to enroll in the free department, so over the years the prices are becoming higher. For example, a literature tutor in 2022 had a salary of 2 thousand rubles. per hour, now up to 3 thousand rubles. and higher. When the summer season ends, tutors raise prices, but then they do not lower them to the previous level, but simply continue to increase evenly, as demand grows every year.”

Parents of schoolchildren say that they often have to pay not only for tutors, but also for additional classes with school teachers. For example, Yulia Lozovskaya, the mother of a 9th grade student, told Kommersant FM about this. She noted that the cost of the tutor’s services has changed; previously, the eldest child studied with him: “Moscow prices have risen. I pay a history tutor 1.2 thousand rubles, and he comes to your home. Varya studied with the same teacher, and then the lesson cost 1 thousand rubles.

Online training in social studies costs 800 rubles. Also, the child also goes to additional classes in Russian and mathematics at school, they cost from 300 to 500 rubles. At the same time, receipts are issued for payment for the month.”

The workforce shortage in education is exacerbated by the move of some teachers to the private sector. However, most specialists prefer to do both, noted Irina Abankina, a professor at the National Research University of the Higher School of Economics: “15-20% of teachers are no longer associated with the school. And about 30% combine teaching with work in the tutoring segment. It turns out that only half of the teachers are not involved in tutoring in one form or another.

As research data from the Higher School of Economics shows, many teachers are now leaving precisely because of excessive workload and low pay. We still couldn’t cope with this and now we are in a situation of critical personnel shortage.

At the same time, many teachers register as self-employed or individual entrepreneurs. At the same time, a large number of tutors have the pedagogical qualification of “subject teacher”. So many people are looking for this combination: school work and private employment.”

In February 2024, specialists began to be contacted to prepare for the Unified State Examination and the Unified State Exam by 31% more often, Avito Services analysts calculated. The most interest is shown in mathematics and Russian; the demand for tutors in these disciplines has increased by about 60% over the month. Among the elective subjects this year, schoolchildren give preference to English, social studies and computer science, the study says. At the same time, high school students do not prefer face-to-face classes, but communicate with the teacher in an online format.
