On September 17 at 11.20 am, Alexander Khvan died in a Moscow hospice. He was 65 years old. They almost said goodbye to him in the winter of 2020, when he was admitted to the hospital. Then he was put into an artificial coma due to lung disease, but he defeated death. And all the last time Alexander was ill, he lived in the Veterans’ Home because he needed constant supervision. The illness knocked him out of active life and did not allow him to work. Filmmakers collected money to somehow support their comrade.
The director’s younger sister Elena Khvan, who also works in cinema and heads an acting agency, some time ago turned to her colleagues with a request to financially support her brother, fortunately he himself did not know about it. I might get angry. And then things got so sad that Alexander, Sasha, as many of us called him, and he himself delicately turned for help to those who wanted to congratulate him on his 65th birthday in 2022, saying that the funds would go towards food and medicine. Any physical activity caused him severe shortness of breath and suffering. There was no strength, but… “I continue to fly in my dreams,” he said.
Alexander was a witty and wise man. On his page on social networks he described himself as a psychoanalyst, a mass entertainer, in the company of “devil knows who.” He was born on December 28, International Cinema Day, which he never forgot. I considered the coincidence to be non-random. He worked on the film almanac “The Arrival of a Train,” dedicated to the 100th anniversary of cinema, where he shot one of the five short stories “The Wedding March” with the participation of Alexander Kaidanovsky (this is the artist’s last film role). And this fact cannot be called accidental either. Everything was predetermined… Alexander’s homeland is the city of Cheboksary, although his father was a Korean, a native of a Manchurian village, from where the family was forced to flee to the USSR in 1933, fleeing the Japanese. The elder Hwang was a miner, educated and worked as an engineer, and wrote memoirs of which his son was very proud – he was immersed in the family history. And the acquaintance of father and mother was described in her book by Elena Khvan, who recently discovered her historical homeland.
After reading a book about the classic of Soviet cinema Sergei Gerasimov, Khvan decided to become a director and entered VGIK, his masters were Lev Kulidzhanov and Tatyana Lioznova. He started brilliantly in the 90s. It was an unprecedented rise. Great hopes were pinned on Alexander. He received many awards for his early films. “Dyuba-Dyuba” with Oleg Menshikov, “Good rubbish, bad rubbish”, “Easy to Die” came out. Later works no longer had such a resonance; problems arose with producers. The series “Shatun” was re-edited against the will of the director. Sasha was very worried.
He had a colorful appearance, and his colleagues more than once invited him to small roles. He played a Chinese in “Giselle Mania” by Alexei Uchitel and many other “Asians”, a janitor in “Piter FM” by Oksana Bychkova, and most recently a shaman in “The Heart of Parma” by Anton Megerdichev, and this is his last acting work.
