Hollywood screenwriters tentatively agree to stop strike

Leaders of the striking Writers Guild of America (WGA) and representatives of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) have reached a tentative agreement to end the nearly five-month strike. Negotiations with the striking actors are still ongoing, reports Associated Press.

“The WGA has reached a preliminary agreement with the AMPTP. This was made possible by the continued solidarity of WGA members and the extraordinary support of our union brothers and sisters who marched with us for over 146 consecutive days,” the guild said in an email sent to WGA members. AP reviewed it. The three-year agreement must be approved by the guild’s council and members before the strike officially ends.

The AP notes that another statement released by guild members on social media said writers should continue to boycott work until the strike is officially announced.

Meanwhile, the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike continues. In a statement, the actors’ union said the guild continues to call on the AMPTP to “reach the fair agreement that our members deserve and demand.”

Hollywood screenwriters have been on strike since May, and actors joined them in July. The strike has already led to the Emmy Awards being postponed to January. Numerous films have been delayed, such as the Dune sequel. At the beginning of August, representatives of film studios already held a meeting with the strikers, but it turned out to be to no avail.
