Head of the Ministry of Energy: export of electricity from Russia in 2022 increased by 15% from the pre-pandemic level

Energy Minister Nikolai Shulginov summed up the results of electricity exports from Russia in 2022. According to him, exports this year increased by 15% from pre-pandemic levels by 2020.
“Compared to 2020, the growth today, almost at the end of the year, is somewhere around 15% of the pre-pandemic level,” the minister said in an interview with Rossiya 24 (quoted from “Prime”). He explained that it is incorrect to compare with 2021, “because during 2022 one of the major countries refused to export.” He did not specify which country it was. In the spring, the Baltic countries refused to import electricity, Finland this year limited imports.
According to the Central Dispatching Directorate of the Fuel and Energy Complex and Inter RAO, Russia increased export of electricity by 2.2 times in 2021, up to 25 billion kWh. The most active consumers of Russian electricity last year were Finland (growth by 3.2 times), the Baltic countries (growth by 1.5 times), Georgia (growth by 2.9 times).
According to Eurostat, Russian electricity exports to the European Union (EU) in January-October 2022 made up in monetary terms, €968.5 million, 87.5% more than in the same period in 2021, when the EU imported electricity from the Russian Federation in the amount of €516.5 million. As of mid-2022, Russia almost doubled increased electricity export to China: in five months, the volume of supply reached a record 1.78 billion kWh for $85.2 million. Electricity exports to Georgia, Kazakhstan and Mongolia also intensified.
In December, Kommersant found out that electricity production in the European part of the Russian Federation and the Urals had fallen by more than 1% year-on-year since the summer, and by 3% in the power system of the North-West. The key reason is the suspension of electricity exports to the EU countries.
