Guardian: The company associated with the Prime Minister of Britain remained in Russia after the announcement of the resignation

Indian IT company Infosys, founded by the father of new British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s wife, is operating in Russia eight months after it announced its resignation. The newspaper reported The Guardian.

Infosys announced its withdrawal from Russia in March after Mr. Sunak was accused of making “blood money” for his family amid the conflict in Ukraine. The management of Infosys stated that less than 100 employees work in the Russian division and the company has no clients in Russia.

The Guardian reports that Infosys has maintained a staffed office in Moscow and is paying subcontractors to provide IT services for a global client, although a company spokesman said they want to end the arrangement.

In April, sources at Infosys said it was “urgently” closing a division in Moscow. Seven months after the announcement, the company’s nameplate was still hanging outside Infosys’ Moscow office. The newspaper’s sources confirmed that the administrative staff continued to work as part of the transition period. According to the sources of the publication, the remaining workers were instructed to dispose of IT equipment before moving to India or dispose of it in an “environmentally friendly” way.

An Infosys representative said that since the beginning of the year, the company has taken several steps to suspend operations in Russia, and all Infosys employees supporting client projects have been fired.

“Infosys does not have active relationships with local Russian businesses. The process of transferring the few remaining partners and administrative staff is underway,” the company said.

The founder of Infosys is one of the richest entrepreneurs in India, Nagawara Ramarao Narayana Murthy. His daughter Akshata Murthy, Mr. Sunak’s wife, owns approximately 1% of Infosys. With the current capitalization, this corresponds to approximately 690 million pounds (about $785 million).

Former British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak took over as prime minister on 25 October. He succeeded Liz Truss, who resigned on October 20 after serving 45 days.
