Production of Swiss Gruyere cheese will fall by 10% this year, reports Bloomberg with reference to industry representatives. Manufacturers are forced to reduce production volumes due to the military conflict in Ukraine, which provoked an increase in inflation and, accordingly, the cost of living, as well as a slowdown in the global economy, the agency notes.
“Exports have already fallen by 10-15%,” Philippe Bardet, head of the Gruyère Cheese Organization, known as IPG, was quoted by the agency as saying. According to Mr. Barde, the reduction in supplies to Belgium amounted to 40%, or about 400 tons, while supplies to the United States decreased by about 25%, or almost 1 thousand tons. The only major cheese market where export growth was recorded became Germany. “It is noticeable that buyers are sensitive to prices,” summed up Mr. Bardet.
