Fashionable art out of thin air will change the world
One of the French brands presented a bag out of thin air at Paris Fashion Week. More precisely, from airgel – a nanomaterial discovered almost a hundred years ago. But only now is he beginning to enter into objective everyday life. The cloud clutch was developed by Professor Ioannis Michaloudis, a Greek scientist, researcher and artist who has been working in the field of Art&Science for more than 20 years.
The bag weighs 33 grams, is 99% air and 1% natoglass. Airgel is the lightest solid material on Earth. It can withstand extreme heat (1200 degrees Celsius) and pressure up to 4000 times its weight. It is very thin, but not fragile at all. It is already used to make cosmic dust traps and heat insulators.
Ioannis Michaloudis is one of the first researchers in the world to use ethereal nanomaterials in fine art and design. It is not surprising that this happened in Paris: the Greek studied at the Sorbonne University, where he defended his dissertation in fine arts in 1998. And then, in 2001, he conducted research in the field of nanotechnology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he began his research on the use of airgel in fine art.
In Russia there are also institutes and individual specialists who study this nanomaterial. For example, scientists from Novosibirsk Akademgorodok have been working on airgel since Soviet times. They have already launched the production of airgel chips, which can be used to produce double-glazed windows that retain heat well and have high sound insulation. By the way, the material perfectly transmits visible light, but blocks infrared radiation. In short, it has enormous potential – it can revolutionize visual art, architecture and design. But it is still very expensive.
It is not yet known how much the air bag costs, but they say the price will not be lightweight. And yet this is a step into the future. 15 design samples have been developed, probably over time they will appear at fashion week, and then in the ladies’ wardrobe. And then they will turn into airy furniture and knowledge.
