Grabar Restoration Center allowed the conservation of the “Trinity” – Kommersant

There are no threats to the safety of the Trinity icon by Andrei Rublev in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, says Dmitry Sergeev, general director of the All-Russian Scientific and Restoration Center named after academician I. E. Grabar. He told TASS that decisions on the necessary restoration and conservation measures will be taken after experts assess the preservation of the icon by the extended restoration council.

Mr. Sergeev assures that the temperature regime for the icon in the temple is maintained within the normal range. “The humidity is somewhat different from the ideal, desired, the one to which the icon is accustomed,” he specified, but assured that there were no sharp jumps in the temperature and humidity conditions inside the capsule, which could threaten the icon.

According to Dmitry Sergeev, the duration of the exposure of the “Trinity” in the temple cannot “cause any emergency destructive changes.” “If the conditions for the icon’s stay do not change dramatically and do not worsen in general, then the duration of its stay in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior cannot have a direct negative impact, while the most dangerous moment is the transportation of the icon,” he said.

Speaking about the possibility of conserving the icon instead of restoration, Mr. Sergeev named this as one of the possible options. He noted that experts should make the decision. “To do this, an extended restoration council should be convened, to which leading experts in the field of study, preservation and restoration of ancient Russian painting are invited. They examine the current state of the icon and determine the task for restoration,” he explained.
