Amendments have been made to Russian GOST to prohibit manufacturers from using arbitrary packaging volumes for socially significant products. This was reported by press service Prosecutor General’s Office. According to the department, such changes were made due to widespread manipulation among manufacturers, when the volume and weight of products are reduced and their price increases.
According to the new requirements, products such as butter and sunflower oil, vermicelli, sugar, salt, flour, rice, millet, black tea, as well as some other essential food products must have fixed values on their packaging. “For example, according to the new rules, buckwheat must be packaged in 500, 1000, 2000 grams, milk – 200, 250, 500, 1000, 2000 milliliters,” the department clarified.
In August, the Prosecutor General warned manufacturers, suppliers and sellers of socially significant goods about responsibility for price manipulation. Then the department proposed to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to take appropriate measures to resolve the situation and introduce uniform requirements for the packaging of products.
