The films “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” do not contradict the provisions on spiritual and moral values, said Anton Gorelkin, deputy head of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy (United Russia). He also opposed the compulsory licensing of motion pictures.

Speaking about Oppenheimer, Anton Gorelkin stated that “the history of the creation of nuclear weapons and the study of the inner world of one of the fathers of the atomic bomb carries a humanistic message that is more relevant today than ever.” He also added that the Barbie movie is “deeper than it looks, and contains a fair amount of social satire.” “Of course, both films are far from masterpieces of world culture, but they are much better than many films that this year the Ministry of Culture issued a distribution certificate and didn’t look at spiritual and moral values (although it should have),” he emphasized, without specifying which movie speech.

Both films came out in worldwide release on July 20. They were not officially shown in Russia, but they were published on torrents, though in “screen” quality.
