According to the agency Bloombergciting anonymous sources, Google is in talks with suppliers to move part of its production from China to India. Google is reportedly in discussions with contractors Lava International, Dixon Technologies India, and Foxconn’s Indian division Bharat FIH to partially shift production of its Pixel smartphones.
In May, Indian Technology Development Minister Ashwini Vaishnav met with Google CEO Sundar Pichai at the corporation’s California headquarters. It is reported that it was about the proposals of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to actively attract international high-tech companies to the country and provide comprehensive state support to the development of technologies.
If Google moves some of its production out of China, it will follow example other technology companies that have either already done it or are planning to. A slowdown in the economy, administrative barriers especially manifested during the COVID-19 pandemic and severe lockdowns in China, as well as growing geopolitical tensions have led to the fact that more technology companies are rushing to withdraw their production from China. Among them are Apple suppliers, as well as Samsung, Microsoft, Amazon and many others.
So, at the end of 2022, the export of Apple smartphones from India reached $2.5 billion, which is twice as much as a year earlier. Back in 2019-2020, Samsung withdrew part of the production of smartphones and personal computers from China to Vietnam. And last summer, Samsung announced the transfer of all display production from China and South Korea to the same place.
