Austrian glassmaker Riedel may halt production due to gas crisis in Europe, reports Bloomberg. Vintage furnaces in which the manufacturer melts glass can fail if production has to be suspended due to a lack of energy resources.
“I’m going ahead hoping we’re not the Titanic,” Riedel told the agency. He added that the energy crisis is making “everything uncertain and business people are very nervous.”
The entrepreneur noted that at the moment there is not a single energy supplier who would agree to conclude a contract with the company for three years or even 12 months, so the manufacturer is forced to “buy energy day by day.”
Riedel was founded in 1756 in Bohemia. One of the representatives of the Riedel family, Josef Riedel, is considered the inventor of uranium glass. Today, Riedel is best known for its production of glasses and decanters.
Earlier, Czech media reported that pencils from Koh-i-Noor may rise in price by 15–20% due to the fact that the company can no longer purchase wood directly from the Russian Federation.
On July 28, the European Commission released the final version of the Save Gas for a Safe Winter plan. Two days before, the EU members agreed on a political decision to reduce gas consumption, adopted it almost unanimously, only Hungary was against it. The plan calls on countries to cut their gas consumption by 15% between August 1, 2022 and March 31, 2023. The reference point is the average consumption in the same months over the past five years. And on August 5, the EU Council announced the adoption of this resolution by all members of the community.
