Germany will increase investments in gas infrastructure, fearing new attacks on gas pipelines – Kommersant

Olaf Scholz’s government plans to at least double investment in gas infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, reports Bloombergciting their own sources. The German government wants in this way to ensure uninterrupted supplies and sufficient gas reserves even in the event of a repeat of sabotage on gas pipelines, such as those that happened on Nord Stream in September last year.
Earlier this week, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said “we should expect this to happen again” and therefore the government plans to create a “strategic reserve in case the pipeline system fails somewhere again or the gas supply is cut off again “.
The government wants to commission at least one more floating LNG terminal at the port of Rügen by early next year, the agency said. And in the future, two more floating storage facilities may appear there.
Germany began to actively invest in the development of gas infrastructure after Europe practically stopped receiving gas from Russia. In particular, Bloomberg notes that Germany has accelerated the approval process for terminal projects and three LNG import terminals have already been put into operation this winter. In the coming years, the launch of six more terminals is expected, for which about €10 billion has already been allocated.
