Germany cancels Pantera concerts over Nazi salute

Germany has announced the cancellation of three upcoming European shows by Texas metal band Pantera. This was supposedly done after a case became public in 2016 when the band’s lead singer, Phil Anselmo, performed a Nazi salute at a concert and shouted the modern racist slogan White Power!
Pantera was excluded from the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festivals; in addition, the concert at the Vienna Gazometer has been cancelled. As the festival promoter commented, the decision to keep metalheads off the stage was made following “intense conversations with the artists, our partners and you, the festival fans.” The administration of the Vienna site did not comment on the cancellation.
Pantera’s forthcoming performances – the first in more than 20 years – even before they were canceled met with a sharp reaction from a part of the audience, primarily from Green Party activists. Thus, party representatives stated that the group adheres to neo-Nazi ideology, therefore it would be especially inappropriate for the musicians to participate in the Rock am Ring festival, which takes place in the former buildings of the NSDAP committees.
The reaction of the group itself is not yet known. Recall that in 2022, Rex Brown and Phil Anselmo – the two surviving members of the classic (until 2002) line-up of the group – announced a reunion and a new world tour.
