German company Claas continues deliveries of harvesters to Russia – Kommersant

The CEO of the German engineering company Claas, Jan-Hendrik Mohr, expressed disappointment that Russia did not extend the grain deal. Nevertheless, the company continues to supply harvesters to the country.
“We cannot and do not want to leave one of the most important agricultural regions in the world,” said Mr. Mohr (quoted by TV channel NTV). Harvesters are not subject to sanctions, unlike tractors, which can be used as vehicles during a military conflict.
Jan-Hendrik Mohr believes that the termination of the grain deal will change “commodity flows and prices” and also hit “the poorest of the poor.” “Russia suffered the least, there is a lot of wheat there. It also affects us less in Europe because we have the purchasing power to buy products from others,” he explained, adding that it was a “humanitarian dilemma.”
Claas has been operating in Russia since 1992. In 2005, the company opened a plant in Krasnodar for the production of combine harvesters, tractors and other agricultural equipment. In March 2022, Claas announced that it was ending the operations of the plant in Krasnodar.
Since July 18, Russia has suspended participation in the grain deal due to non-fulfillment of its conditions. UN Secretary General António Guterres urged extend the initiative. Ukraine informed UN on the decision to create an alternative route for the supply of grain. Vladimir Putin promisedthat the Russian Federation will share with Africa part of the income from rising prices after leaving the grain deal.
