The appointment of Valery Gergiev to the post of director of the Bolshoi Theater was commented on by the artistic director of the Moscow Academic Children’s Musical Theater named after N.I. Sats Georgy Isaakyan.
– It is clear that Valery Gergiev is an extraordinary manager; under him, the Mariinsky Theater soared to the top of the world’s best theaters. But, speaking about the general directorate and naming historical names – Vsevolozhsky, Telyakovsky – people forget that these wonderful directors did not stand at the conductor’s stand every evening. And Gergiev gets up.
I saw how Valery Abyssalovich worked 24 hours a day: he never lived the life of a normal person: he didn’t sleep normally, didn’t eat normally – he worked and works all the time. I observed this when I staged a play in his theater. And for a long time he has existed in more than one theater, and is on constant tours – he and Marinka just returned from a big tour of China.
And now, with all this, he will have the Bolshoi, where there is a New Stage and a Chamber Stage and the construction of a stage in Kaliningrad. This will require titanic work from him. A challenge for him. Yes, he had a lot of them, but this one is extraordinary. One can only wish to endure it.
