General Director of the Metropolitan Opera Peter Gelb responded to the words of the Russian bass Ildar Abdrazakov about neutrality and the suspension of relations with the American theater.
Last spring, the Metropolitan Opera ceased cooperation with Russian artists who refused to publicly distance themselves from Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Russian-led CBO in Ukraine. So, Anna Netrebko and Khibla Gerzmava were denied speeches.
Gelb, quoted by The Associated Press, explained last year’s decision by saying that “I wouldn’t be able to look at myself in the mirror knowing that Putin’s supporters are performing on our stage.”
In December 2022, in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta, Abdrazakov noted that he himself had put his relationship with the Metropolitan Opera on hold out of solidarity with his colleagues. “People of art must remain neutral,” he said. “And thus continue to unite peoples and countries with our art.”
The CEO of the Metropolitan Opera expressed regret that, in his opinion, “he [Абдразаков] doesn’t really understand what’s going on in the world.”
The other day it became known that Ildar Abdrazakov suspended cooperation with the Italian theater La Scala, explaining this by family circumstances.
