GAZ filed a lawsuit against Volkswagen for 28.4 billion rubles

The Arbitration Court of the Nizhny Novgorod Region received a claim from the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) against the German automaker Volkswagen for 28.4 billion rubles, should from the files of arbitration cases.
It is specified that the lawsuit was filed with the court on April 7. No details are provided in the case file.
In mid-March, GAZ already addressed suing Volkswagen. The court ruling stated that the company filed a lawsuit for the imposition of interim measures after Volkswagen prematurely terminated the agreement on contract assembly at the plant in Nizhny Novgorod, which expired in 2025. In this regard, GAZ suffered losses in the amount of almost RUB 15.6 billion
As a result, the Arbitration Court of the Nizhny Novgorod Region decided to seize the shares of 28.06% Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, 16.8% Skoda Auto AS, 55.14% Volkswagen Finance Luxemburg SA in the authorized capital of Volkswagen Group Rus, etc. In addition, GAZ demanded to arrest the FGR shares in Volkswagen Components and Services, Scania Insurance, Scania Leasing and Scania Finance. At the same time, the arbitration court prohibited the Federal Tax Service from carrying out any registration actions related to the liquidation, reorganization, change in the composition of participants, increase and decrease in the authorized capital of Volkswagen Group Rus LLC.
It was clarified that the imposition of interim measures was necessary to prevent Volkswagen from leaving Russia until the problem was resolved. However, on April 3, the court partially granted the petition of Volkswagen Group Rus and canceled the arrest on real estate objects, including the plant in Kaluga, as well as on production equipment and other movable property of Volkswagen Group Rus.
The Nizhny Novgorod site has been idle since early March 2022 due to component shortages and logistical disruptions following the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. The fact that Volkswagen decided to curtail the contract production of cars in Nizhny Novgorod at the facilities of the GAZ Group, Vedomosti wrote in July 2022. At this site, Volkswagen has been assembling cars under a contract since 2012, including Skoda Octavia , Karoq and Kodiaq, Volkswagen Taos. The design capacity of this production is 132,000 vehicles per year. On August 10, 2022, the parties terminated the contract assembly agreement.
