The G7 countries are discussing the possibility of lowering the price ceiling for Russian oil, US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt said at a briefing for foreign journalists. He said the United States and allies are “committed to working to deprive Russia” of oil revenues.
“The short answer is yes,” Mr. Piatt responded to the corresponding question TASS.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov earlier in March saidthat lowering the price ceiling for Russian oil to $30 threatens the United States with serious economic consequences. According to him, Moscow hopes that Washington will not make such a decision.
The price ceiling has been in effect since December 2022, it was introduced by the G7 countries, the European Union and Australia. Companies from these countries can transport or insure Russian oil only at prices below $60 per barrel. From February 5, 2023, there is also a price ceiling for petroleum products from Russia at $100 and $45 per barrel, depending on the category.
