According to the regulator, the company “deliberately deceived” users for years, without their consent, connecting them to an Amazon Prime subscription. This subscription gives you access to Amazon’s video streaming service, free shipping, and more, and costs $139 per year. The FTC requires the company to pay a fine, the amount of which is not reported, as well as the abolition of such practices.
“Amazon was cheating people and luring them into renewing subscriptions without their consent, which not only caused user frustration but also cost them substantial money,” the FTC said. According to the regulator, the company used manipulative and deceptive tactics in order to subscribe them to Amazon Prime without the consent of users. In addition, the company deliberately made it difficult to terminate an Amazon Prime subscription. “Amazon’s management has stalled changes that would make it easier for users to cancel their Prime subscription, or refused to make such changes because such changes would negatively impact Amazon’s financial performance,” the FTC said in a statement. The regulator noted that the Amazon Prime subscription brings in about $25 billion a year for the company and that the growth of the number of subscribers is considered by Amazon as one of the main business goals.
