From “Music of the Mind” to “Water of Dreams” – Kommersant FM

Kommersant FM columnist Dmitry Butkevich talks about what projects are starting in different countries in the winter.

The portal about world art ArtNews has published a list of exhibitions that must be seen this winter in different parts of the world. There are 33 of them. I will tell you about some that seemed the most attractive to me.

Let’s start with the project “Pesellino: a Renaissance master revealed”, exhibition at the National Gallery, London. Francesco Pesellino was a real star in Renaissance Italy more than five centuries ago, and collectors of the time especially valued his ability to paint small figures rich in detail.

National Gallery restorers have unveiled The Story of David and Goliath, a vast battle scene full of fighting soldiers. Pesellino’s legacy is small, as he died at 35.

“Cecilia Vicuña: Water of Dreams” at the Museum of Latin American Art of Buenos Aires. Star of the 2022 Venice Biennale, artist of Chilean origin. Her paintings, with an emphasis on feminist cosmology and indigenous knowledge (more than 200 in total), will be included in the retrospective.

“Caspar David Friedrich: Art of the New Century” at the Hamburg Kunsthalle, Germany. To celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of Caspar David Friedrich, the seminal Romantic painter, several German museums are loaning 50 of his paintings. About 90 works on paper by Friedrich and other representatives of his circle will also be shown.

“Yoko Ono: Music of the Mind” at Tate Modern, London. The exhibition will present 200 works by John Lennon’s girlfriend, a member of the Fluxux movement.

And several rather marginal biennial projects.

The traveling Thailand exhibition, now in its third year, has returned to Chiang Rai, a province in the country’s northeastern region. The show was called “Open World” – after the Buddha sculpture in the ancient city of Wat Pa Sak.

The Biennale in Lagos, Nigeria, entitled “Sanctuary,” will explore how African artists of all stripes can come together.

And the Diriyah Biennale of Contemporary Art in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Called After the Rain, the 92 artists featured here include both locals and foreigners.
