France does not intend to abandon the contract with Russia for the processing of regenerated uranium from spent nuclear fuel, French Minister of Energy Transformation Agnès Pannier-Runachet said. She explained that the refusal is disadvantageous to Paris.
“We will not do this, since the refusal of this contract will bring Russia more benefits than what this agreement brings to it now,” Ms. Pannier-Ryunashe said on air BFM Business (quote from TASS).
Today, May 16, the Minister will meet in Paris with colleagues from the UK and 14 countries of the European Union (EU) to discuss ways to reduce dependence on Russia in the field of nuclear energy. According to Le Figaro, the EU imported €1 billion worth of nuclear fuel from Russia in 2022.
In 2018, Techsnabexport JSC (owned by Rosatom) and the French Electricite de France (EDF) entered into contracts for the processing of French regenerated uranium (recovered after spent nuclear fuel reprocessing). It can be used, in particular, for the production of fuel for nuclear reactors.
